“Ask Why”

Hello, I’m Light. Welcome to—

Many Christians are mentally in bondage, avoiding sinning solely out of a fear of judgement and eternal damnation. Accepting our freedom, we have yet to. I suppose it is because we are of the belief that this is the intent of God.

Upon pondering this and considering the nature and character of God as love, I have resolved that I do not believe that the aforementioned is God's desire or intent for those who follow Him. A loving God, I reckon, would invite us to obey after having found sound reason for and benefit in obedience rather than merely in fleeing from a source of fear like wrath. (Wrath has already been poured out on Christ; there is none now to be received for those who believe in Him). Don’t you reckon so, too? Instead of being slaves in ignorance, our loving God invites us to be of the mindset of following and avoiding sin with reason and understanding.

When we understand why an action is good or bad, we live freely, and are better equipped to “walk by the Spirit”. (Genesis 5:16) Instead of our reason for avoid sexual immorality being merely, “I am afraid of going to hell,” it becomes, “I am avoiding the self-destructive spiritual, physical, emotional, psychological, and generational consequences”. Instead of our reason for worshipping being, “I am afraid of Hell,” it would be, “God is good to me.”  Instead of our reason for following Christ being, “Because I do not wish to go to Hell,” it would be, “Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins in love, called me to be set apart and His own, and in acknowledgement of the consequences of sin, I want to love like He loves.”

God loves us; God is love and loving. When you understand that God is a loving God, your approach to living shifts from ignorant and fearful obedience to understanding and pursuing and choosing wisdom and reason in the pursuit of goodness. God’s commands are given out of love. In that same love, He has given us the grace to follow His commands in order to avoid the consequences of sin that so grieve Him.

May we ask our loving God the why behind His commands. May we ask Him for wisdom, knowing that He gives it freely without finding fault. May we walk in this wisdom; in this, the true fear of God. May we trust His goodness more and more as we receive His answers. Instead of avoiding sinning driven by fear, may we pursue understanding of the reason for either doing or not doing an action in the freedom our gracious God has called us to walk in. May we ask why.

Grace and peace,
