“And God Said” | Hearing God’s Voice Through His Word (Part I)
Hello, I’m Light. Welcome to—
Introduction
Does God speak? Is God able to speak? The truth is revealed in many and various verses of the Word of God. In this post, we take a look at the first phrase in the Word of God that explicitly reveals that God speaks; “And God said . . .”
“And God Said…”
“And God said, “Let there be light”;
and there was light.”
—Genesis 1:3 ESV
Have you ever read the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible? It is a beautiful and iconic story; the Story of Creation. One of the most repeated phrases in the story is, “And God said…”
Say (v): 1 utter words, so as to convey information, and opinion, a feeling, or intention, or an instruction. Synonym: speak, utter, voice, pronounce.
A synonym for “to say” is “to speak”. God has the ability to speak in the way most commonly thought of when one hears the word “speak”. In fact, His ability to speak is reflected in the ability to speak that humans have as beings made in His image and likeness. (Genesis 1:26)
God’s ability to speak is explicitly deductible through the phrase, “And God said”. Before the first appearance of this phrase, however, God’s ability to speak was implicitly revealed through His Word. From the very first verse, from the very first word, God was speaking.
