Social Media & Discipleship
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”
—Matthew 28:19-20 💗
Disciple (n): a follower Jesus during his life, especially one of the twelve Apostles; a follower of a teacher, leader, or philosopher.
- Origin: Latin disciplus ‘learner’.
📖
On social media, one may have ‘followers’. According to the definition above, a disciple is a follower or learner. A social media platform may be as a subtle or overt form of discipleship. On social media, one’s followers may be taught, led, and influenced, gaining information, direction, education, and intellectual and moral instruction from the content of whoever they follow.
Social media facilitates global interconnectedness and a potentially highly diverse audience. In other words, you are able to connect with people across the nations on a social media app, and people from across the world are able to start following you and viewing your content. Social media is therefore an opportunity to make disciples of all nations.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

If you are a faith-based social media platform, I encourage you to continue to seek to be a disciple of our Lord, Jesus Christ in order to steward your following well. Seek to follow, learn from and be led by Him. Seek to learn His commands so that you may teach, influence, and lead others to obey them. May your heart posture as a social media influencer and leader of this generation be, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” May they follow and become more like Him through their following you.
